What Are Implant Dentures?

Dental implants are small titanium cylinders, which are sometimes called posts, that we surgically place beneath the gumline. They bond with the surrounding bone, so they are able to serve as prosthetic tooth roots. They provide a remarkably strong base of support for crowns, bridges, and full-arch dentures.

Dental implants can serve as the foundation for either fixed implant dentures or removable implant dentures. During your consultation, we will determine which type of prosthetic best fits your circumstances.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

As their name indicates, fixed implant dentures are permanently attached to the implants that support them. They can only be removed by a dental professional. Many patients like the idea of having their teeth in their mouth 24/7. The biggest downside to this option is that it requires more implant posts and greater jawbone density than removable implant dentures.

Removable Implant Dentures

Removable implant dentures, sometimes referred to as “Snap-On” dentures, are easy for patients to remove on their own for oral hygiene purposes. They snap onto and off of small attachments on top of the dental implants. We sometimes recommend removable implant dentures for individuals who have lost some bone density in their jaw.

The Implant Denture Procedure

You might be a candidate for implant dentures if:

  • Consultation: Our team will assess your candidacy for treatment and start planning the details of your tooth replacement journey.
  • Implant surgery: After any necessary preliminary care, we will carefully place the implants into your jawbone at their pre-planned positions.
  • Osseointegration: Your implants will bond with the surrounding bone tissue, after which we may place small connector pieces (abutments) on top of them.
  • Restoration: Our team of dental prosthetic experts will design and place your gorgeous and functional set of new teeth.

The implant denture procedure usually takes several months from beginning to end. It includes four main stages of treatment:

  • You are missing all or most of your teeth throughout one or both of your dental arches.
  • You are free of active gum disease.
  • You are well enough to undergo minor surgery.
  • Your jawbone is strong enough to support dental implants.

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

Implant dentures are superior to their traditional counterparts in multiple ways:

  • Implant dentures offer a strong bite force. They will not become destabilized when you are eating and speaking, and they can stand up to virtually any food.
  • Implant dentures can preserve your jawbone. They stimulate it so it can remain strong and whole. In contrast, traditional dentures may accelerate bone loss.
  • Implant dentures look and feel very natural. They are often regarded as the next best thing to natural teeth!
  • Dental implants last a long time. In fact, they might last for the rest of your life!
