How does Invisalign work?
Like traditional orthodontics, Invisalign applies pressure to the teeth to gradually shift their position over time.
While traditional orthodontics achieve this with metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses a series of customized removable trays.
Invisalign is often recommended as a complement to other cosmetic treatments as part of a smile makeover.
Invisalign is removable, so you can eat and drink what you want whilst having treatment.
Unlike braces, Invisalign can provide a straighter smile without limiting your diet or affecting your appearance.
By using clear aligners made of clear BPA-free plastic, Invisalign allows patients to receive orthodontic care without making it obvious. Using this advanced solution, patients can achieve straighter teeth without the feelings of self-consciousness that traditional braces often cause.
While functional and effective, the metal wires and brackets used by braces to move teeth into place are not designed for comfort. In contrast, the smooth surfaces of Invisalign aligners often make it easy to forget you are even wearing them in the first place.
While it is essential that you wear your aligners for 22 hours every day, the ability to remove them when necessary makes living with orthodontic treatment much more convenient. Metal braces are permanently attached to your teeth.
Since you can remove your aligners at meal time, you can eat and drink whatever you want without fear of damaging the wires and brackets associated with metal braces. However, don’t drink hot or dark beverages with your aligners in place to prevent warping and staining.
Braces can make it tough to clean your teeth properly as food particles can get stuck to them. Since Invisalign aligners are removable, you can brush and floss normally to maintain healthy gums and teeth.
Invisalign is planned in advance, so we can more accurately predict when your treatment will be finished
The Invisalign treatment process
1 – Consultation
Before treatment, you will meet with one of our skilled prosthodontists for an initial consultation. Your smile, oral health, and candidacy for an Invisalign treatment plan will be evaluated.
2 – Impressions
If Invisalign is right for you, precise digital impressions of your teeth will be taken. A series of customized aligners will then be created from these impressions at a trusted top-grade lab. The number of aligners depends on the seriousness of your misalignment.
3 – Alignment Begins
Each aligner will gently shift your teeth closer to their proper positions. You must wear each one for a minimum of 22 hours a day for about two weeks. After that, you'll switch to the next aligner and so on. It is important to follow the treatment plan as prescribed.
4 – Check-In Appointments
You'll come back for progress exams every four to six weeks. Your dentist will give you the next batch of aligners during these visits. Most patients need an average of 24 to 36 aligners, depending on their individual misalignment.
5 – SmartForce® Attachments
If needed, your Boston Prosthodontics dentist may attach small, barely noticeable protrusions to some of your teeth to help your aligners exert pressure in just the right areas. It depends on the individual case.
6 – Completion of Treatment
All cases are different, but most patients' teeth reach proper alignment in about 12 to 18 months although, it could take less or more time.
Invisalign is a series of custom-fitted clear aligners that straighten your teeth without having to rely on metal wires or brackets. Using our advanced 3D computer imaging technology, we can create a treatment plan for you based on your unique smile during the consultation process.
What is the cost of Invisalign?
The cost of your Invisalign clear aligner treatment will depend on your specific case and duration of your treatment. The more severe the issue, for example, the more aligners you would require and the more your treatment will cost.
Can adults use Invisalign?
Yes, anyone with healthy teeth and gums could be suitable for Invisalign treatment. Age is not necessarily a barrier. In fact, many adults are deciding to move forward with straightening treatment because there are discreet options like Invisalign available.
How long do I wear my retainer?
Invisalign aligners should be kept in for a minimum of 22 hours a day.
