Implant-Supported Bridges

Implant-Supported Bridge vs. Traditional Dental Bridge

A dental bridge is designed to fill in the gap left behind by one to three adjacent missing teeth. It is fabricated from a single block of porcelain with two dental crowns fused together on either side of a pontic (artificial tooth). The number of pontics needed will depend on the number of teeth missing. Whereas a traditional bridge uses your remaining teeth to support the restoration, an implant-supported bridge uses dental implants and abutments to permanently replace missing teeth.

Before placing the restoration, you will undergo dental implant placement surgery where the doctor will insert small titanium posts into your jawbone. Once the posts have successfully fused with your jawbone, your doctor can attach your customized restoration. Compared to traditional dental bridges, an implant-supported bridge provides a longer-lasting approach to tooth loss without damaging neighboring teeth. It can also prevent jawbone degeneration, changes to your facial structure, and further tooth loss.

Benefits of Implant-Supported Bridges

An implant-supported bridge provides many benefits, including:
  • Restored dental function and structural support
  • Improved comfort when speaking and eating
  • Stimulated jawbone and tooth conservation
  • Enhanced self-confidence and better quality of life
  • Long-lasting, natural-looking results
  • Better oral health

What to Expect during the Procedure

During your consultation, our doctors will review a series of x-rays and scans to determine the health of your teeth, gums, and jawbone. In cases where a significant amount of time has occurred after tooth loss, jawbone preparation procedures, such as bone grafting or sinus lift surgery may be necessary. Sufficient jawbone strength will ensure that the implant posts successfully fuse and create a healthy foundation for your restoration.

The doctor will carefully review the dental implant procedure, costs involved, and overall timeline with you to ensure you are comfortable with the procedure. Once a treatment plan has been established, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled for your dental implant surgery

The overall recovery period after implant placement, known as osseointegration, will take approximately four to six months. In cases where bone grafting is necessary, this will add an additional two to four months to the overall procedure. Once the implant posts have successfully fused with your jawbone, the doctor will attach the abutments and take digital impressions of your smile for our state-of-the-art lab to use in designing your customized restoration. In about two to three weeks, the doctor will attach your restoration to reveal a beautifully restored smile.

Compared to traditional dental bridges, an implant-supported bridge provides a longer-lasting approach to tooth loss without damaging neighboring teeth. It can also prevent jawbone degeneration, changes to your facial structure, and further tooth loss.
