When would we use a Dental Crown?

Missing Teeth

Missing Teeth

Missing teeth can be replaced by an implant-supported crown.
Dental implants are placed within the gum tissue, fusing with the jawbone, and simulating a tooth’s roots. Implants can support several types of dental restorations depending on how many teeth you are missing.
Aesthetic Concerns

Aesthetic Concerns

If you are not a good candidate for other cosmetic treatments.
Crowns can improve a versatile range of imperfections. The dentist will match the restorative materials to your existing tooth enamel so the dental crown looks virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.
Broken or Weakened Teeth

Broken or Weakened Teeth

Dental crowns provide the coverage a tooth needs
When cracks and other breakages cannot be repaired with dental bonding, inlays, or veneers. Since a dental crown caps the entire surface, it will provide additional support to the already weakened structure.

Root Canal Treatment

Protect the structure from future infection.
When decay reaches the inner structure of the tooth, you will need a root canal to clean out the infected pulp. After a root canal, the dentist will typically recommend a dental crown.

Your 5 Step Dental Crown Procedure

Here is what to expect when you are treated with a traditional porcelain crown at our Boston, MA, dental office…

  • Stage 1
    Preparation:
We treat your affected tooth (or teeth) with any preparatory procedures such as a root canal, to eliminate decay and bacterial infection. We then modify the tooth by shaving down a layer of surface enamel to allow room for the restoration.
  • Stage 2
    Dental Impressions:
The dentist takes an impression of your mouth, allowing us to custom design your restoration to fit comfortably yet snugly between existing teeth.
  • Stage 3
    Temporary Crown:
The dentist places a temporary crown on your tooth while the design for your permanent crown is sent to our lab for manufacturing.
  • Stage 4
    Construction:
Our world-class dental lab crafts your restoration from porcelain or other material of choice. The on-site location allows for a quicker turnaround time and more convenient treatment for our patients.
  • Stage 5
    Placement:
Once the permanent crown is finished, you will return to the office to have it placed. The dentist checks the fit and then secures with dental cement for optimal functionality and longevity.
